Supporting sustainable economic development
and direct trade in Guatemala

FAQs

Have you read over the website are are still left with questions? We're often asked...

Q: You work in economic development, but are you a charitable organization or a business?

A: AGAIG is a 501(c)3 tax-exempt charitable organization dedicated to economic development in Guatemala. We ourselves are not a business, but we do support many Guatemalan businesses that turn a profit for their owners. AGAIG makes no money from any of the businesses we support.

Q: How are you funded?

A: AGAIG has a dedicated base of generous supporters who help fund our operations. In addition, we run educational, hands-on tours ranging from half-day workshops to week-long service learning trips. Income from these tours helps cover our basic operating expenses.

Q: I assume you're fair trade, organic, certified with all types of labeling?

A: We follow the principle that trade should be fair, and that products should be created with as much care for the environment and those producing them as possible. Given that the terms "fair trade" and "organic" require external certification by organizations that charge thousands of dollars for the privilege, we figure that our money is better invested in our programs rather than paying for the certification. Q: This all sounds wonderful. How can I lend a hand?

A: In short, you can buy coffee, donate money, or lead a trip. Find our more at our Get Involved page.
